मुंबईसारख्या गजबजलेल्या शहरांमध्ये महाराष्ट्र निसर्ग उद्यानासारखी हरित पट्टा तयार करून मुंबई महानगर प्रदेश विकास प्राधिकरणाने पक्षांच्या संवर्धनास हातभार लावला आहे. उद्यानातील अनुकूल अश्या वातावरणामुळे शहरी तसेच स्थलांतरित पक्षांची ही हक्काची अधिवासाची जागा बनली आहे.
एका बाजूला मिठी नदीचा परिसर आणि दुसऱ्या बाजूला गजबजलेले शहरीकरण, यांच्या मध्यभागी असलेल्या या उद्यानात १२५ पेक्षा जास्त पक्षांच्या प्रजाती आढळतात. त्या जवळजवळ भारतात सापडणाऱ्या एकूण प्रजातींच्या १०% आहे. त्यामध्ये स्थलांतरित पक्षांचा देखील समावेश आहे. कीटकनाशक, स्वछ्ताकर्मी तसेच फळे खाणाऱ्या पक्षांचा उद्यानात वावर आढळतो. त्याचप्रमाणे असामान्य प्रजातींची देखील येथे नोंद आहे.
मुंबई शहराच्या मध्यभागी असल्यामुळे अभ्यांगतासाठी पक्षी निरीक्षण, पक्षी अभ्यासक आणि पक्षी छायाचित्रण यासाठी उद्यानहे चांगले स्थान आहे.
श्री. मारुती चितमपल्ली यांचा जन्मदिन व (स्व.) डॉ. सलीम यांच्या जयंतीचे औचित्त साधून दि. ५ नोव्हेंबर ते १२ नोव्हेंबर हा कालावधी दरवर्षी ‘पक्षी सप्ताह’ म्हणून साजरा करण्यास या वर्षी शासनाने मान्यता दिली आहे. तरी उद्यानाने या वर्षी ‘पक्षी सप्ताह’ निमित्त उद्यानात आढळून येणाऱ्या काही पक्ष्यांचे ऑनलाईन छायाचित्र प्रदर्शन आयोजित केले आहे, जेणेकरून सर्वसामान्य लोकांमध्ये पक्षांद्द्ल जनजागृती निर्माण करत येईल.
